Rectification
Rectification is the process of converting images to a map coordinate system. The basic idea is to choose points on the image and hope that they will match points on the map. Rectification is a difficult task searching through the image and vice-versa the map. Sometimes the accuracy of the map points is not well known.

Remote Sensing - Residential Area Fort Worth

This is a pre-dawn image of a residential area of Fort Worth, Texas.
This module is about thermal infrared remote sensing and the word thermal relates to heat. Therefore thinking thermally, targets that emit heat are labeled "warm" and these targets will have a clear gray tone. Targets that do not emit sufficient heat are labeled "cold" and these targets will have a dark gray tone.
(1) Roads have a clear gray tone because heat is emitted from the asphalt. Roads retain heat throughout the night.
(2) Natural and man made vegetation do not retain heat at night, hence the dark gray tone.
(3) Sidewalks and Patios: Sidewalk is similar to road, it retains heat - clear gray tone. The dark gray tone patios are without heat from the patio-light and the clear gray tone patios are with heat from the patio-light.
(4) Storage sheds in back yards: Clear or dark gray tone depends on the type of material that was used during construction of the fore-named target.
(5) Automobiles: Those with dark gray tone ware parked during the night and those with clear gray spots were recently running. Heat from the engine and tires caused the clear gray spots.
(6) Bright spots on many roof tops: Most likely because of a skylight or a vent duct.

Lab 2 - Question

The image(1) upper left is multispectral and the image(2) lower right is panchromatic. The primary difference is color - one is in RGB 4-3-2 and the other is in black & white 1-1-1. The resolution is different, probable 30m vs. 15m. The spatial pattern is also different. Image(1) shows vegetation islands in red and
clearly defined water bodies in blue. In Image(2), islands looked like water bodies.

Choropleth Map by State

You are observing a Thematic Choropleth map designed using the Lambert Conformal Conic Projection. After many days of trials & errors, I decided to use the above projection because of its north - south orientation. This projection maintains shape giving the map a realistic look. Since this map is a lab presentation and the data is "unipolar", I opted to "class" the data using a Five Class Natural Break classification. The data shows percentage change in population by state. I divided it into five groups and reported to the nearest tenth of a percent.
Choropleth Map by Division

The basic design of this map is the same as the one above - same projection. This map shows percentage change of population by division. I aggregated my data at the division level and used division "means" to organized and classified my data into Five Equal Interval Classes. Again, lots of trials & errors.

Map Critique Lab
Good Map - This is an example of a good map. This map clearly shows the six Districts in Belize (Corozal, Orange Walk, Belize City, Cayo, Stann Creek, and Toledo). It also shows the surrounding villages and Islands (Known as Cayes).
Bad Map - This is an example of a bad map. I do not know exactly what this map represent but I do know that it looks confusing. The colors are too closely match, except for black and green. Also, I do not know which states these colors are representing.

Mental Mapping Exercise - GIS 3015/L
I chose the East Coast as my first choice because I am familiar with this coast. When I first came to this country, I settled in New York then twenty years later I moved to Florida. I recently visit the Mid-West, Colorado, and fell in love with the beautify mountains. The West Coast, California, is my second choice because it is familiar grounds. I vacation yearly to spend time with my aunt and family in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Also, I have close relatives living throughout Texas and that is my reason for making Texas my third choice.
